During a protest on Monday in Thanjavur over the Cauvery water dispute, Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, criticised Chief Minister C. Vijay. He accused the CM of ignoring the state’s water needs while Tamil Nadu received no water.
While speaking, a crowd member shouted “Trisha, Trisha.” Stalin paused and responded with a double‑entendre about the actress, which many found offensive.
TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan called the remark “disgusting” and said it dragged political debate to a new low. He accused the DMK leadership of using provocation to lower standards.
BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy also condemned the comment as “disgusting, obscene, vulgar and shameful.” He added that even a person with family would not speak so vulgarly.
Thirupathy urged that Stalin be arrested for the remark, saying that such low‑grade speech should be punished by the courts.
The tweet sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many users demanding accountability and calling the comment unacceptable.
The incident highlights how political rhetoric can quickly become heated, especially during sensitive issues like water distribution. Both parties have pledged to address the fallout and maintain decorum in public discourse.
