Tewolde Gebremariam will become Air India’s chief executive and managing director next month. The former head of Ethiopian Airlines Group is stepping into the role after a thorough search by the board. He will replace Campbell Wilson.
Gebremariam visited New Delhi and Mumbai this week, meeting senior airline staff and Tata Group leaders. The meetings were part of his first trip to India after his appointment. The discussions focused on the airline’s future plans.
He brings almost 40 years of experience in aviation. Gebremariam served as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines for more than 11 years. He is currently a senior strategic advisor to Delta Air Lines and to the IFC/World Bank Group.
Air India is under Tata Group ownership and is working on ambitious expansion. The airline faces external challenges but aims to grow its fleet and routes. Gebremariam’s experience is seen as an asset for this phase.
The board announced the appointment on August 5 after a comprehensive search. The decision was made by a dedicated committee of the company. It marks a new chapter for the airline.
Tata Group took over Air India from the government in January 2022. Singapore Airlines later bought a 25.1 percent stake. The airline is now a joint venture with a mix of stakeholders.
Earlier this week, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran said he will step down when his term ends on February 20, 2027. He also serves as chairman of Air India. His departure will coincide with Gebremariam’s arrival.
